Wintergreen Essential Oil: Gaultheria procumbens

Wintergreen oil has the ability to improve circulatory function, promoting healthy blood flow and encouraging many correlating health benefits!*

Uses: Aromatic, Topical

Description

Wintergreen oil has long been used as a homegrown remedy for muscle aches and joint pains, with its use traced back through Native American tribes.  The wintergreen plant is one of only a few species that naturally produce methyl salicylate, which is the primary chemical compound in wintergreen essential oil.  This compound is used commonly in medicinal balms and rubs to relieve pain associated with arthritis or other forms of joint stiffness.  While wintergreen essential oil is not itself the primary ingredient in those balms, its use does promote more efficient blood circulation, which is the primary means through which other medications reduce pain associated with muscle and joint stiffness.

Uses

  • Dilute wintergreen essential oil with a carrier oil and massage into the skin to encourage blood circulation in the area.
  • Add 1-2 drops of wintergreen oil to a running bath to promote feelings of warmth and relaxation.
  • Diffuse into a room to produce a bright, sweet, minty scent.

  • Directions for Use

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.

Internal use: Wintergreen essential oil should never be consumed.

Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area, diluting with a carrier oil to minimize the risk of irritation.

    Cautions

Wintergreen essential oil is toxic to humans and should never be consumed in any quantity.  When used topically, avoid any contact with open wounds or sores.  Essential oils should never be used in place of a prescribed medication, as the sole treatment for illness or injury, or against professional medical advice.
